Behind the Scenes – 2004 Selects Hockey Pics

If you’ve seen some of the pics we did for the 2004 Selects hockey team, you’ll know that we’re trying to get something different for each of the players than what you normally see for league pictures. There’s a balance between taking the time to be creative and the number of players you need to shoot and cost.  Every now and again the stars line up and I’m able to set aside a night to do fun pics for certain teams…just so happens a lot of those shoots are teams my kids play on LOL.  Here’s a couple of finished shots that were made available for the players.

The idea for all of them was to get a background to go completely black. There’s a couple of ways to have gone about doing that and I actually had to do a little bit of both. Ideally, I could have accomplished what I wanted with a black background if I had the boys pushed away from the back wall a bit more. But I was limited in the space I was using and decided that if my external strobes hit the wall too much and came into view, I’d have to go one extra step and fix that all in photoshop. I was able to get it done last year with their pics cause we shot outside and the background just faded into nothingness because there WAS no background to be lit – see the shot below:

To get the cool shadowing effect on their jerseys and face, I lit them with 3 strobes – 2 from the sides and behind and one key light to fill their faces. I used a beauty dish for the key light to focus the light pretty tight and without the light sock so I’d get a more “contrast” look.

To see how it was all set up and the process, take a look at this behind the scenes time lapse video I put together.
