Minnesota Travel Story: Part 2 of 2: Duluth – St. Louis Post-Dispatch

Posted by on Aug 27, 2015 in Published/Commercial, Travel | No Comments

Welcome to part 2 of 2 of our travel story to Minnesota. Part 1, Minneapolis + Mall of America, was a great way to kick off our driving trip from St. Louis, but I’ll tell you what, Duluth featured below, is a place I’ve told about a dozen people now that I’d love to move there. Amy covered a lot of details of our Duluth trip yet again in the Post-Dispatch, so for all the locations and info, please see our travel story there. Below, I’ll feature a few of the published shots plus some extras that you only saw if you follow us on Instagram/Twitter @LuxePhotoSTL.

Above: The cover pic for our travel story in the Lifestyle section of the Post-Dispatch. What a great setting…for a place to live or the back drop to a good book!

Above: The Aerial Lift Bridge. Duluth’s biggest landmark. Watching it go up and down is pretty cool, especially when you see large ships passing through. Even getting caught in the traffic of waiting for the bridge to go back down so you can pass over is not a big deal. Everyone pretty much got out of their cars and walked to the water front to check out the large barges pass.

Above: Some canal shots that afternoon. I thought the family crammed into the bike trolley looked pretty cool. And the girl with the popcorn feeding the birds…it was a last minute throw in for the Post photo editors. I wasn’t sure how it would fit in the story, although I do love it. Lot’s of families hanging out on a beautiful day.

Above: Little Angie’s Cantina and Grill. Great tex-med food and a cool drink taken with the iPhone. I try to get a lot of shots as we go places with the iPhone to post on our Instagram and Twitter feeds. A lot more convenient and the quality from phones nowadays is pretty good!

Above: We stopped at a chocolate shop along the canal, and darn, I don’t have the name! If anyone knows the chocolate company please let me know via email brian@luxephotography.com or @LuxePhotoSTL on IG or Twitter. Anyway, our eyes were bigger than our stomachs cause we ate so much in the car ride to our next destination…which is not a good thing…see below.

Above: Spirit Mountain. My wife Amy was like, …”you realize we’re doing a coaster down a mountain as you’re eating all this chocolate, right?” It’s basically a gravity type coaster down a mountain. It’s unique. It’s awesome. It has great views of Duluth. I told everyone I’d do all the pictures first before trying it myself. Good thing. Also tried out a little slow shutter/panning trick to capture the speed.

Above: Some perspective of the ride. This is at the end when you are being pulled back UP the mountain. The first time you ride the brakes all the way down…or was that just me? Each time after, you just let gravity take you down as fast as possible.

Above: Edgewater Hotel & Water Park. This was our home base while up in Duluth. The kids loved it. Water park, arcade…walking distance to the lake and for finding geocaches in the area. We found one right across the highway after taking the walking bridge.

Above: One of our laid back nights. We found a small tavern with live music and had to stop. Great beer. GREAT BEER! I found my new favorite from Bent Paddle Brewing in Duluth…the darkest, most rich brew I’ve had. I need some in STL!

Above: Across from our Edgewater hotel, there was a Dunn Bros. coffee shop. I went there alone one night just to get a coffee and chill for a bit. Being alone at times isn’t so bad. Quiet. Just another set of iPhone pics as I tweeted out how lonely I was that night LOL.

Above: The shot I was almost too lazy to get. It was our last night in Duluth and we got back to our room late. A storm over Lake Superior was rumbling in the distance, putting on a lightning show. Quick flashes here and there, I couldn’t quite see bolts, but I know if I was lucky enough with my camera, I might get one. My gear was in my car (which I normally don’t leave there unattended) and I debated how sleepy I was vs. going outside to get it. I could take the chance of my gear disappearing or I could just get off my butt and go get it…and try some lightning shots. I went ahead and grabbed my stuff, came back to the room, and me and my 10yo sat outside on the balcony for 30 minutes trying to get a shot. Out of probably 100 takes, I had this one frame that captured a bolt. As lightning shots go, there are MUCH cooler ones, but this is my best I’ve done so far.
