Last week our Gulf Shores travel pictures were in the Lifestyle section of the Post-Dispatch highlighting our 12 hour drive into Alabama for the first time. Be sure to read the link above as Amy details how to rent a house along the beach and some other tips for your family trip!

Below are some of the pictures highlighted in the story plus a few more of my favorites. Those of you who follow us on our Twitter or Instagram (both @LuxePhotoSTL) feed have been able to keep up with our behind-the-scenes pics as we are on the road for various stories.

Above: The house we stayed in and a 2 minutes walk to the beach behind or in front of us. The place was beautiful. Lots of rooms, places to play games and accommodate several families.

Above: I always get these inside pictures before our family makes our way in…cause this doesn’t look like this AFTER we’ve been there.

Above: I would consider this a somewhat semi-private beach. Hardly anyone around us other than the families that have rented places in the area. Public beach was a few miles down the road – and it was packed.

Above: There is somewhat of a hassle of bringing your chairs and “STUFF” to the beach each time, and even though we were only 2 minutes away, it was far enough. Next time I’d definitely make sure we are on the beach.

Above: My oldest son trying out the boogie board. Took some trial and error and some help from Uncle Michael, who was with us for the stay.

Above: The kids wanted to go looking for sand dollars along the beach so the consensus was we had to get up at daybreak and be the first ones out there. Boys and I got up at 5:30am or so and made our way to the beach. Sadly, not many whole sand dollars to be found, and probably because the storm surge was pretty big while we were there. But it was a cool experience.

Above: Not many sand dollars to be found so we went into shell collecting. All colors, shapes and sizes. When we got home, we made an art project out of it.

Above: Sunset tour to see dolphins…but no dolphins. Sad face. But the boat ride was fun and our hosts were very friendly and full of local info. Most of the people on the boat just so happened to be from Missouri as well!

Above: I posted some pictures on Instagram while we were on the water about the lingering effects of the oil spill in the area. Sadly, most of the fishing industry – per our captain – is still in shambles. A lot of distrust and negative feelings toward the oil companies and government.

Above: My favorite pic. Lucky. My youngest found a tree frog on the boat. We’re taking a few pictures of the front walking around the rail and my son gets real close to look…and at that moment the frog jumps on his head. The slower shutter speed because of the lighting we had actually makes the jumping motion of the frog look even cooler!
