The hatchet job of quality that is Facebook photos

I’ve tried every which way of displaying photos on Facebook and it’s just atrocious. I’m torn because the reach you get (more on that in a bit) is great because everyone can view/see the image in their timeline and it’s easy to share. The problem is people see your image and the quality is so poor that as a photographer you don’t want to be judged by it.  For example – below is a great shot I love of a player on my son’s team last night. This is how it is displayed on my blog and it looks pretty close to the original. Now fine print – the lighting at the Mills Ice Rink is bad and I’m shooting through smudged glass. I call this pic: “The Nelly train has left the station and these players are trying to catch it!”

Now here is how it looked when I first posted to Facebook if you actually clicked the link:

And here is how it looks in the timeline preview:

Now the preview image is what I’m most worried about. It’s the one most people will see on first glance. I think due to compression for Facebook, you have to start out with an almost perfect picture and then upload it at twice the resolution for it to look decent. The original image isn’t perfect. I actually spent a little time on it because of all the issues presented with shooting that rink through the glass. So because I’m starting out with a “not perfect” image, Facebook compression makes it even worse.

Back to Facebook “reach”. Ah! Where they get you as a small business. I know I’m not the only person (especially my photog friends) that have noticed our views/reach just don’t make sense. The number is always all over the board and it seems to get less and less during certain periods. I’ve read this is where Facebook wants businesses to pay for reaching people – or even just your followers SEEING your stuff. It literally makes no sense. So at this point I have no idea if it is even worth posting on Facebook as the degradation in quality seems to be too much of a cost for people/followers to even see it.
